Three letter (and email) writing tips

We had a letter writing session in class today. Among the many things we discussed, there were these three useful tips to make letters or emails more professional:

NO contractions

  • I’m writing to complain about …
  • I am writing to complain about …

AVOID emotional language

  • The service was a complete disaster
  • The service did not meet my expectations

USE the passive form

  • I expect you to give me a refund
  • A refund is expected
